Sell Idea or Invention for Profit and Let It Work for You

How an inventor can get rewarded for creating a great idea? Licensing is an easy answer. Most inventors wish to sell their idea or invention for profit. This is our specialty. We help inventors to sell idea or invention for profit in the in America. We find a U.S. manufacturer willing to buy your idea of a new and original consumer product. We will determine the best way to protect your idea. We will negotiate the best term for a licensing agreement, draft the contract, and send your share of royalties to you. We just need a great idea to attract a potential buyer.

Every American company is in the market for great consumer product ideas. That is why many inventors do nothing but sell idea or invention for profit to those companies. Selling or licensing your idea and receiving royalties is a wonderful way to dedicate one's life to creative solutions. An inventor who sells an idea or invention for profit to a manufacturer shifts all the risks of commercialization to the latter. No need to seek investment funds, to develop a manufacturing process, to build a prototype, to test the market... Just sell idea or invention for profit and leave all that to professionals. If you do that you will be left with enough time to create many more ideas. And, of course, sell idea or invention for profit to the same - or different - buyer.

The United States history knows numerous examples of inventors who sell idea or invention for profit and received royalties through their entire life. Every year manufacturers pay many millions of dollars in royalties to those inventors who decide to sell idea or invention for profit. This arrangement is equally convenient for both parties to the deal because as a result of selling ideas inventors get rewarded for their creativity and free their time to do what they enjoy most: invent. And manufacturers get a developed idea of a new and original consumer product which can be produced in quantities and put on the market in no time and bring profits to both parties.

Beware: to sell idea or invention for profit is not something that is done quickly and easily. Creating an idea is just the first step. Your intellectual property must be protected, a purchaser for it needs to be found, a license agreement should be negotiated and drafted, the flow of royalties controlled. But don't worry: if your idea is found promising and you retain our services, we'll do all that for you. So the only thing you do will be to create an idea. We will help you to sell your idea or invention for profit and receive royalties.

Steps For Inventors

With the success of the new show, American Inventor, I was curious about the ways a novice inventor would go about getting their invention out in the public eye. A lot of self-employed individuals are self-employed because of a skill they possess or a product they've created that not many people, if any, can duplicate.

It all starts with an idea

First you have to have your million dollar idea. I've seen this process take place for someone many years ago. This person had several ideas for the next big role playing game. This guy had passion and I admired his drive and motivation. He was a big game freak himself so his game ideas were on point and very creative. I honestly don't know what became of his ideas but he had all of the potential and drive. If you don't have the passion or the motivation, you're setting yourself up for failure before you even try. Document your ideas by keeping a journal. Write everything down so that you won't forget things you may want to include down the line.

Do Your Research

Is your invention already out on the market? You may think you've come up with the best idea ever only to realize it's already been done. The key here is to research patents and make sure someone hasn't already beat you to the punch. You'll also want to research your target market. Will there be a demand for your product? Researching the market will also benefit you because you'll see what you'll have to compete with and what your competition is currently selling their product for.

Creating a Prototype

This is your initial design come to life. Creating your prototype is critical before you even begin filing for a patent. You want to be sure your prototype is working to the standards you've set so that later on down the road, you won't be regretting not including key features in your patent application. Not only that, but your prototype is what you'll be using to sell your idea to manufacturers and investors. You want it to be in the best working order possible. It won't mean it's perfect, but get it as close to your final product as possible.

Filing a Patent

You'll want to seek professional help in this area. Filling out the patent paperwork can be handled by you, but seek the services of a lawyer and patent professional to review your paperwork. You'll want to do your research on these experts as well. Just because they provide the service you need, just like in any industry, you want to deal with people that are on the up and up. Ask around for referrals or interview different lawyers and patent specialists to be sure they can handle all of your needs.

These steps are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a lot of places where you can find good information on where to begin in bringing your invention to life. The ebook below is a great how-to guide. The author is an inventor himself and knows the ins and outs to getting your ideas off the ground.

The Greatest Inventors You've Probably Never Heard Of

Look around you and the chances are you'll see plenty of inventions that were created by now world renowned individuals. Telephones, televisions, light bulbs and medicines have all been discovered, developed and explored by inventors whose work became their namesake. Becoming a famous inventor isn't the norm however as plenty of today's most popular inventions would quickly stump the general public if you asked about the genius behind their creation. Here, we take a look at three inventors whose work we now take for granted but - as people - few of us know a lot about.

The world wide web is a global phenomenon that connects millions of people and businesses on a daily basis, 24-7, all year round. Credited with creating the internet, British engineer and computer scientists Sir Timothy Berners-Leefirst came up with the idea for the net in the late 80s. By the early 90s he and a fellow colleague at CERN (European Organisation for Nuclear Research) has completed the first successful communication via what we now know as the internet. Berners-Lee currently works with the British Government to make the internet a more accessible and open place.

Have a wander down your street or a stroll along one of L.As infamous boulevards and you'll no doubt come across rollerblades. Invented in the early 80s by brothers Scott and Brennan Olson, the product was first known as in-line skates before being trademarked as 'rollerblades'. The company Rollerblade Inc now contributes on a regular basis to charity and fans of the boots have been known to skate across states to raise money against hunger and poverty.

Finally, the next time you go to that 'hole in the wall' to withdraw cash, check your balance or top up your mobile why not spare a moment's thought to the inventor behind the automated teller machine AKA the ATM. Scottish inventor John Shepherd-Barron was credited with inventing the world's first ATM machine in the 1960s where a branch of Barclays in London first installed the machine. Using the idea of a chocolate bar dispenser as the catalyst for his creation, Shepherd-Barron went on to create the monetary equivalent that was first operated using chemically coded cheques. Nowadays ATM software is a multi-billion pound industry that extends right across the globe.

Thinking of turning your mind to inventing? Just remember to make sure everyone knows who to credit when your idea makes it big!

The History of Copy Machines: Chester Floyd Carlson

Carlson's motivation came during his time as a patent analyzer. A large portion of his job was re-creating flawless copies of drawings submitted by inventors, and Carlson quickly realized what an invention that effortlessly made photocopies would mean. So he sat out to design and create was is known today as copy machines.

He graduated with a degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1928, smack dab in the middle of the Great Depression. The legend goes, 22-year-old Carlson applied for over 80 jobs before finally being hired by Bell Laboratories in New York… and was fired within a year.

Carlson would find work again for a patent attorney near Wall Street. About a year later he was hired by P.R. Mallory (now known as Duracell), an electrical parts manufacturer, where he became the head of their patent department.. When not working, Carlson attended New York Law School, and eventually received his LL.B. degree.

It was during his time at the patent attorneys office that Carlson came up with what would be his greatest accomplishment. And in the fall of 1938, Carlson and an assistant, using a complicated procedure that involved glass slides, zinc plates, lamplights, negatively charged powder and heat to make a copy of a slide written in ink that said "10-23-38 ASTORIA."

Despite this incredible creation, no company would financially support Carlson enough to assist him in developing and improving it. It wasn't until 1944, when a nonprofit organization called Battelle Memorial Institute, agreed to financially back Carlson, in exchange for a portion of the profits… if there were any.

However, the Battelle Memorial Institute funding was limited, and Carlson quickly became aware he'd need more financial support to complete his project.

That support arrived from Rochester, New York, home of the Haloid company and their Head of Research John Dassauer. Daussuer's company joined Carlson in 1946 as a research paper, and was also responsible for changing the name of the process from "electrophotography" to "xerography," the name used today. It is derived from the Greek words "xeros" and "graphos," which mean "dry" and "writing," respectively.

In 1947, Haloid manufactured the first copier. By 1949, the first photocopier was offered for public purchase. However, it was massive and difficult to operate, and initially did not succeed financially.

However, technology continued to improve, and Carlson adapted his project to produce a better project. The final result of Carlson's invention was the first commercial automatic copy machine, The Xerox 914, which was released in 1960.

Carlson passed away eight years later. His greatest invention, the Xerox 914, currently sits on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.

RIP Kerr MacGregor - Solar Panels Inventor

Being an inventor is a pretty cool job. You get to, in most cases, improve society through technological advancements. This means that, from the point of view of someone with an economics degree, increase everyone's well-being because society can make more output from limited inputs.

What could be even better than being an inventor? Being an inventor in the field of renewable energy. This means that whilst society can produce a greater output and economic well-being, negative externalities (pollution) is cut simultaneously, producing an even greater positive effect.

Kerr MacGregor was one of Britain's leading solar inventors. His work led to the invention of Solartwin. This is a solar water-heating panel which is freezable, unlike the majority of other systems currently on the UK market. Standard thermal solar panel systems rely on thick anti-freeze being mixed in with the water system so that the panels don't freeze over the winter. The issue with this is that whilst conventional thermal systems can operate without any issues, MacGregor's system is better. Anti-freeze is viscous and clogs up the pipes, requiring a powerful pump to circulate the fluid around the system. These pumps use a lot of energy, compared to Solartwin's 5 watt pump that's required to operate the system. Solartwin works because it uses flexible thermally conductive pipes which actually freeze solid in winter without cracking. In sun, they then thaw out quickly to produce hot water.

Kerr also produced a wide range of solar inventions, not just domestic thermal panels. He invented solar clip fins which are used in DIY solar collectors worldwide, underground solar heat storage for greenhouses, large solar collectors for swimming pools and transpired fabric solar collectors for drying timber. In particular, his thermal slates are used across hundreds of Scottish homes, where they produce dehumidified and heated air at low cost.

More novel inventions include his famous solar-powered bagpipe - he would arrive at international conferences, wearing a kilt, smiling and piping the Gay Gordons. The Guardian reports that at the Patent Office, a technical description of his Thermoscreen, a folding heater, includes a photo of a prototype he built, in tartan!

Kerr originates from Scotland, although he spent his early childhood in India and then went to boarding school in the UK. He was always a great thinker - interested in politics, music and travel. Not to mention motorbikes, kilts and the latest green gadgets, obviously!

Unfortunately, Kerr MacGregor passed away last week aged 70, leaving his wife, four children and two grandchildren. He will be sorely missed - there are more than 5,000 Solartwin installations in place across the world, so his name and reduction in carbon dioxide emissions will go on even though he is no-longer with us. Indeed, the average system can reduce carbon dioxide by almost 1,000kg per year, so that's 5 million kilogrammes of carbon dioxide being saved by his systems every single year - we should all be grateful to him.

That is the Inventor of Soccer? - Self Help

Football creation is fantastic. You realize that soccer is among the most well-known activity in the world. All people on the planet like soccer and love the fantastic football gamers like Pele, Maradona, and the current multi proficient soccer player like Messi also as Ronaldo. Soccer alone is actually a perplexing game where a ball is cased by twenty two players. However it may be the pride of a nation and it need strong and skillful athlete. Even there are lots of football club enthusiasts club like the followers of MU, the enthusiasts of Real Madrid and so on. Nonetheless, the soccer creation is complicated given that several nations confess that it's invented by them.

America which may be the representative of Usa of The us features a distinct viewpoint about the football invention given that they've their particular "football" which is various through the widespread football that is played by several individuals across the planet. In their football creation there's an identify that is extremely popular in American football. He's Walter C. Camp. He's a coach and activity writer. He produced rugby till it gets to be the game which is popular in US today. He invent the phrase of Scrimmage Line in American soccer. Are you currently satisfied about this different soccer creation?

Many people in Canada claimed which the football invention is occurred in their region and they admitted that football game reflected their tradition so that they referred to as that football is genuinely Canadian activity. So it is possible for them to think that the inventor of soccer is really a Canadian. In Canada, soccer is produced when British soldiers conquered Quebec in 1600s. Right after that the Canadian University released this football to the American University in which it is the initial time for the American heard concerning the football. Regardless of this soccer invention is both right or incorrect, now there exists an expert soccer league in Canada.

The most popular football invention is recognized from England. Many publications noted the soccer which can be almost comparable using the soccer today was played in England in 1200s. Nonetheless this sport was played with out specific rules so it grew to become the rude video game and it could make the players got injuries. It that time King Henry VI did not permitted this game. Though it was a forbidden game, it ongoing developing and now it is the most famous sport in the world especially in England because in this nation there's the best football league on the planet along with Italy and Spain League. The football invention is extraordinary.

The Inventor of Modern Refrigeration

Born on June 11, 1842 in Berndorf, Germany, an engineer named Carl Paul Gottfried von Linde came up with an idea that led to the invention of the refrigerator.

His studies of a continuous process of liquefying gases in large quantities served as the basis for the refrigeration technology. He was able to complete his work in 1876.

Before the invention of the fridge, cellars were provided with packed snow and ice to cool food and serve as a not so modern refrigeration system.

Today most of us have our own refrigerators at home. We have grown accustomed to its presence. But what exactly is refrigeration and what is the science behind a refrigerator that makes it work that way?

What is refrigeration?

Refrigeration is the process of lowering temperature by removing heat from an enclosed space or substance.

How does a refrigerator work?

It's all about the nature of physics. Through compression, a liquid undergoes a rapid evaporation. The rapid expansion of vapors requires kinetic energy. The vapors get energy from immediate surroundings, thus, the area loses energy and becomes cool. This process is the primary basis of today's refrigeration system.

Many devices have inspired our modern refrigerator before it was successfully done as a safe cooling appliance at home. In 1748, William Cullen demonstrated the first know artificial refrigeration at the University of Glasgow, but did not apply it to any practical purposes.

Oliver Evans, an American inventor, designed the first refrigeration machine in 1805. The use of ether was used in the first practical refrigerating system introduced by Jacob Perkins in 1834.

In 1844, an American physician named John Gorrie made a refrigerator for his patients with yellow fever through the use of ice to cool the air inspired by the design of Oliver Evan(1844).

Carl Paul Gottfried von Linde came up with the idea of liquefying gas later.

There were also parts of the refrigerator history where such chemicals were used only to find out they were too dangerous to use. From the late 1800's until 1929, ammonia(NH3), methyl chloride(CH3CL), and sulfur dioxide(SO2) were used as refrigerants.

Fatal accidents happened due to these chemicals. Further research led to the utilization of Freon for compressor refrigerators. It was later found out that these chlorofluorocarbons endangered the ozone layer.

Through the advancement of modern cooling systems, people enjoy the convenience of food preservation without the arduous effort of someone in history long before the invention of refrigerators, given much appreciation, of course, to Carl von Linde with his precious scientific ideas that produced the advent of more effective refrigerators.

Carl von Linde died at the age of 92 in 1934. He had been awarded three Honorary Doctorates, Bavarian crown achievement medal. He was also honored with elevation to personal nobility status among many other honors.

We owe a lot to Carl von Linde. From the simple kitchen fridge to giant walkin coolers and freezers, Carl von Linde helps us keep our food fresh even today!

The Inventor of the Roulette Wheel

The invention of the Roulette wheel is attributed to a French mathematician, Blaise Pascal. It is said that he invented it in the seventeenth century. In this short article we will look at some of the other inventions of this great man.

Blaise Pascal was a man born before his time. He was not only a great mathematician; he was also a great inventor of many things. One of the things he invented was the Pascaline. In appearance this has several features in common with the Roulette wheel, though in fact it is a calculator, and one of the first calculators to be invented.

Blaise Pascal's father was a tax receiver and as a result was often engaged in arithmetic. Blaise sought to help him by making a machine that would help in the tedious task of adding up and subtracting seemingly endless columns of numbers. The machine was the first mechanical calculator that was able to carry tens and hundreds. The numbers to be processed are set up on a series of discs. The calculation is then performed by cranking a handle. The machine was difficult and expensive to build and was quite controversial in that it threatened the jobs of accountants' clerks. Only fifty were ever built.

Two of his other inventions were the hydraulic press and the syringe. Both inventions were the result of his work on the relationship between pressure and force in hydraulic fluids, and went on to show that there was such a thing as vacuum, something that had been refuted previously.

Pascal devoted much of his mathematic work to probability theory. Much of this work concerned gambling and involved a number of conjectures. One of these was the Problem of the Points. This concerned two dice players in a winner takes all game. The game ends prematurely and the question is how to slit the money fairly; equally was rules out as id disadvantaged to person who was ahead; neither was it fair to give everything to the leader. The fair split would be to calculate each player's possibility of winning. Pascal was able to do that with the mathematic construction known as Pascal's Triangle.

Pascal demonstrated that the odds of winning a game of chance such as roulette could be calculated mathematically. It is amazing that no one had done this before him.

The Inventor of Modern Cooling

While many of us are still shivering in much of the country, soon the chill of winter will be behind us and we will be looking for a way to stay cool. If you're someone who loves to know where things come from, here is a basic synopsis of where the origins of air conditioning and refrigeration got its start.

The Man Behind Modern Cooling Systems

When the dog days of summer hit, think of John Gorrie and thank him for inventing what eventually led to modern air conditioning. John Gorrie, who lived from 1803 to 1855, was a Renaissance man in the truest sense. He was a physician, scientist, inventor, and even a humanitarian.

For the sake of this article, we want to concentrate on his passion for invention. But, in a way, his "cool" invention is connected to his medical career. Dr. Gorrie was involved in medical research on tropical diseases. In the 19th century, the prevailing theory for airborne diseases was that they were caused by bad or polluted air. What Dr. Gorrie believed was that warm air caused diseases such as malaria. So, he ordered the cooling of "sick rooms."

What started out as a misguided effort to minimize contagious diseases ended up as the start for modern cooling systems. Since ice at this time had to be imported (can you imagine?), Gorrie began to experiment with making artificial ice.

By 1845, Dr. Gorrie gave up his medical practice and explored refrigeration. On May 6, 1851, Gorrie was given Patent No. 8080 for a machine that would make ice.

But ultimately, the story of Dr. Gorrie and his great idea can be seen as a tragedy. In the midst of raising money for his venture, his partner passed away and so did the project. Dr. Gorrie died in seclusion in 1855. But the original model of his ice making machine and the scientific articles he wrote are housed at the Smithsonian Institution.

The story doesn't end there. In fact, there's talk of foul play. According to John Gorrie's biographer, Vivian M. Sherlock, Frederic "The Ice King" Tudor, was suspected of being instrumental in the failure of Gorrie's invention. Tudor launched a smear campaign against the invention.

Why would anyone do something like that, you ask? Well, there's a reason Frederic Tudor of Boston, Massachusetts was referred to as the Ice King. He was the founder of the Tudor Ice Company, through which Tudor made a boat load of money - literally. That's because he shipped boat loads of ice to places like the Caribbean, Europe, and even India.

While Dr. Gorrie's invention never got off the ground, it laid the groundwork for Willis Haviland Carrier who invented the air conditioner in 1902.

Tesla Secrets

Nikola Tesla and other inventors have made efficient generators that would and could help abolish use of fossil fuels to power the world. Can anyone tell me of other inventors and their generators who the government and/or other companies have suppressed from becoming an asset to the economy and environment?

You have to understand that while Tesla was a genius, he was also a loon. He claimed to be from Venus. Modern Quantum Electro Dynamics is about as perfectly tested as a theory can get; it has been found accurate to one part in 10 to the 15th, and that was 30 years ago, and that was as close as they can measure.

However many people simply cannot believe his claims over the proven success of QED. Anyway, there are so many places that could investigate, if there were something to his claims, someone would be exploiting that; you think North Korea wouldn't love to have free energy and be trying to make a Death Ray?

Many people are trying to use this system today to generate electricity to power their homes for free. There are many guides out there which teaches people how to use such technologies to build generators or coils that will produce electric changes and power homes. Many Americans have built such generators and they seem to work just fine.

Today there are some quite a few systems you can use to generate free electricity to power your home. You can create different systems which can tape energy form the sun or the wind. There are also magnetic generators which have proven to generate some degree of energy too. But creating a Tesla generator is becoming more and more popular as we speak.

Do you want to learn how you too can generate free electricity to power your house at no cost? If yes, then you might want to download a copy of the Tesla Secret Handbook.

What the Inventors of Fraxel Must be Like

The human brain is capable of incredible inventions. It started with the invention of the wheel, and just kept on going. Go to any museum nowadays, and you'll see at least one small section where there are, well, unique inventions. Some of these inventions make absolutely no sense, but they're fun to look at.

Then, there are the inventions that are both intriguing to watch in action, and actually work - Fraxel being a good example. People with skin problems might or might not know about Fraxel, but if they know what's good for them, they'll at least research it a bit more.

Behind every great invention is a great inventor - someone who really knows his or her stuff. In the case of Fraxel, it must have been a bunch of really smart people from Reliant Technologies, Inc. They must have been the people who spent hours in their basements while in high school thinking up ways to solve people's skin problems. Well, considering that Fraxel is meant to mainly treat melasma and age spots, they were definitely thinking ahead.

Oh yes, in separate basements across the globe, these enterprising young teenagers were already thinking about how their skin would look in fifty years or so. These people had studied the faces of their elders, and become repulsed by what they saw. They wanted to find a way to erase those brown spots from the foreheads and hands of their grandparents, and make them happier people.

Well, at least their hearts were in the right place. Although brilliant in science and math, they had a problem with English literature, which halted what otherwise would have been the skipping of many grades. It wasn't their fault that they couldn't find any relevance in the work of Samuel Coleridge Taylor!

They dredged through high school, and luckily top science colleges saw the promise in them, and accepted them right away. Their application essays were riveting, talking about how they had spent years trying to figure out how to "turn back the clock" for old people everywhere. They concluded their essays by saying that this college, about all colleges, would be the missing puzzle piece in their scientific education.

Four years and lots of experiments later, they were college graduates. Now it was time to find a job in "the real world". To them, there was no more realistic place than a laboratory. So it was that they all applied to Reliant Technologies, who shared their vision. Altogether for the first time, they developed this laser treatment. Although, it's too bad their grandparents had passed away by now.

Regardless, this team of exceptional do-gooders have strived for perfection in this laser procedure. True, there have been reports of people who say their skin pigment has been considerably more mottled by this procedure, but, darn it, things take time! They are always on the lookout for new improvements, and are bolstered by the majority of glowing reviews that they have received.

The Inventors Of Modern Soccer - English Soccer History

English Soccer History - Early Days

It's hard to determine exactly how soccer became so popular in England in the 19th century, but the truth is that in the mid 19th century, almost every major town had a semi-professional soccer team. These teams were usually associations of workers from the same factory or institution or simply students at a local University.

Matches between those teams were played occasionally, with little to no prize, but only for competition's sake. However, these matches were played without any rules or a referee and as soccer isn't necessarily a sport that's completely clean of violence, all it took was a harsh tackle or an argument about a particular rule to start a bloody fight between the two teams and their supporters.

But the year 1863 marked an extremely important chapter in English soccer history, as several soccer clubs from all over the country (prominently from London) met up in the English capital and set up a sort of "soccer constitution" called the Laws of the Game (a modified version of the original rules are still in effect today and are still called as such).

That was also the birth certificate of the Football Association, or simply FA that is still ruling over English soccer nowadays and had a tremendous importance throughout the history of soccer in England and the way it evolved.

English Soccer History - Important Milestones

With England being rightfully considered the inventors of modern soccer, one would expect them to be amongst the most successful national squads in the World. However, despite having some world class soccer players throughout time and despite always being favorites for the competitions they start in, the English national squad only achieved few important milestones throughout the entire soccer history in England.

The apogee of English soccer and the most important chapter ever to be written in the entire history of soccer in England was definitely the successful World Cup run in 1966, a competition that was held on English ground, giving them the advantage to grasp their long-awaited trophy.

The 1966 team, captained by legendary Bobby Moore and with other key components such as Jackie Charlton or Geoff Hurst playing regularly, remains the best national squad in the entire English soccer history, especially since their success has not been equaled ever since.

English Soccer History - Modern Era

England is still a top team in Europe and throughout the World and has some players that are considered having world class quality, but the national team still has moderate success, despite being star-studded.

Recently, the form of English clubs overshadowed the poor performance of the national team, as Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool or Arsenal continue to be heavy contenders for each year's European Champion's League, the most prestigious club competition in the World.

Despite being happy with the respect English clubs impose in Europe, fans are still yearning for that long awaited European or World Cup which could mark a new important chapter in the English soccer history.

What Are The Difference Between Entrepreneurial Inventor And Inventor

Inventors of today are having a dilemma whether they should license their products for third party distribution. Would you rather manufacture or reproduce and distribute it yourself or would you sell your rights to another company through licensing if you have invented something you know that will be of great use to the world?

This is going to be a tough one because, first, if you created something, it is natural to always want to hold on to the ownership of something you birthed from within you. Second, watching other people profit from what is essentially yours can be tough. When you license your product, you will get paid and usually, royalties will be huge. Still, there are those who would rather keep the pride of being known as the inventor of something even when they don't earn that much from it. Inventors can be one of two things - an inventor-for-royalties or an entrepreneurial inventor? Which one are you?

As an inventor-of-royalties, you will be selling the rights to your invention to a third party company that will have all the resources to mass produce it. You will get your royalties but once you sell your creation to them, it will no longer be your property. The right to change it anytime if you think there's something you need to tweak here and there is no longer yours. Unless you can cut an agreement with the company saying, you may still add your inputs from time to time as the product is being mass-tested. Other than that, the thing will be completely theirs and what you'll have will be the money that your invention has generated for you.

On the other hand, as an entrepreneurial inventor, you will retain full ownership of that thing you invented. But the challenge of mass-producing it so it can be distributed commercially will be your own. If you are not exactly a businessman who knows the ins and outs of the trade, this can be tough. It is tougher if you don't even have the money to produce your first batch of commercial products. The good thing about being an entrepreneurial inventor though is being able to proclaim over and over to the world that you created this thing and it is entirely yours. That sense of pride can, indeed, be very fulfilling.

Give it a lot of thought, although essentially, nothing will change if you have just developed a product and are considering selling for royalties or mass-producing it yourself. Nothing can change the fact that you invented that product and deserve to be proud of it whether you decide to be an inventor-for-royalties or an entrepreneurial inventor.

Wee all been disappointed at some time or another by products that didn live up to manufacturers?claims. Just take a look around your home or office: How many items do you see that could use a bit of tweaking to make them more useful.

Youe probably never considered following through on your simple ideas for besting design engineers at their own game. But chances are that once I explain how easy and affordable it is to test the waters, youl be canvassing your surroundings for items that could use your personal touch or be motivated to hatch the next blockbuster idea.

Many of my clients come to me with what they think are million-dollar ideas. Theye polled a trusted group of family and friends on the merits and marketability of their invention and the consensus is that it a shoo-in. Lucky for them, these clients approached me at a critical juncture in the product development process?a crossroads where guidance in choosing the right path could help them avoid costly mistakes and wasting thousands of dollars.

Unlike firms that offer to shepherd your product idea to market in exchange for exorbitant up-front fees, my job is to act as your product development coach. In this role, I help clients on limited budgets to do it all themselves and to engage professionals on an as-needed basis along the way.

My overriding objective is to steer clients in the right direction ?which means I might point you to China or back to the drawing board. I learned firsthand the ins and outs of the process when I brought my own new invention to market over 10 years ago ?the Bowdabra. Since then, Ie undertaken several personal projects on a limited budget and gained valuable experience in deciding when to proceed with a new idea and how to monetize it as efficiently as possible.

In my first session with a new client I discuss the viability of the product idea, as well as the do-it-yourself method of exploring whether an idea is patentable using the online services of the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). If youe on a tight budget and can devote several hours to this task, youl find the process user friendly enough. Otherwise, you can hire a lawyer to conduct a patent search for +/- $750. One way to locate a registered patent attorney or agent is through the USPTO directory (www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/olia/oed/roster/index.html).

If your search results reveal that your idea is indeed unique and patentable, youe got a green light to proceed to the provisional patent ?a powerful option that is little-known outside the realm of experienced inventors. The provisional patent helps would-be inventors overcome one of the biggest obstacles they face: reluctance to reveal their idea to the very audience who is the bona fide market for the product.

It a common atch 22? Do I take the risk that someone will copy my idea or proceed with just the encouragement of family and friends. Clearly, it a valid concern among the uninitiated who do not understand the atent pending?features that come with the provisional patent.

The provisional patent provides a low-cost way to protect your idea from potential competitors for 12 months while you do your market research. This is important because conducting demos and surveys among sizable target market segments is the only way to see if your idea has legs long enough for sustained profitability.

The provisional patent gives you the breathing room you need to assess whether it makes financial sense to go on to the next step of applying for a utility patent, which protects the way a product is used and works for a 20-year period, and/or an international patent.

If you are an aspiring Inventor, you may well have wondered how to invent something.

Well it's not as difficult as at first it might appear. Most Inventions come about because an Inventor sees a problem that needs fixing, or an opportunity that can be exploited. In the end for an Invention to be commercially successful, it needs to offer a solution to a problem or failing of existing technology.

From that start point, the process continues with a brainstorming phase, during which the inventor brainstorms and repeats the process relentlessly until they find the solution they are looking for. Now it's easy to say that we are relentless and will keep trying, but actually doing it can be a demoralising path to follow. So to succesfully invent something you must be a believer, you must be absolutely certain that you will get there. A reporter once asked Thomas Edison, "How many times are you going to fail at creating the light bulb?" Mr. Edison replied, "Son, I haven't failed! I've simply discovered another way not to invent the light bulb!"

Once you have the basis of an idea, you need to draw how it works, and complete a technical design. From there you should look to create a working prototype. This is critical, because it is a big mistake to ask non commercial people to visualise how something may work once finished. It is a fact that the closer your invention gets to being as 'real' as possible, the more likely you are to sell it. So you can't do too much to bring it to life, because by doing that you give yourself the best chance of creating a real product from your idea.

The next part of the process is to seek qualified, expert legal advice to advise you on how to legally protect your invention, this may involve patents, trademarks, copyright and some other measures you might be advised to take.

Once you have protected your invention, you need to work out your route to market. This might be working with an invention agent who can help you to open doors you wouldn't otherwise get through, or it may even involve your going it alone and trying to sell a finished product yourself. Either way, just remember, finishing your invention is often the easy part - selling it can be another story...

So! You've had an innovative idea. You nurtured it. You tested it. You tweaked it. You've done preliminary patent searches online, and you think you've got a viable, marketable idea.

Now what? Well, now you need to protect your idea so that no one can steal it. Additionally, you need to get your foot in the door -- so to speak -- with the patent office, so that no one can 'beat you to the punch'. But there's a problem...

As a first time inventor, you may have put all of your expendable funds into developing your idea. You cannot afford the many thousands of dollars to hire an expensive patent attorney or patent agent.

So here's your plan: you need to protect your idea and you need time to contact prospective backers or manufacturers. With your idea or prototype safe, you can then negotiate for license fees, royalties, signing fees -- the list of ways to monetize your invention is unlimited.

But what about that "protection" ? What's keeping your new potential business partners from stealing your idea? It's a PROVISIONAL PATENT APPLICATION! It's fast. It's inexpensive. It's easy to complete.

Benefits? Without "judging" the patentability of your submitted invention, the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) will date- and time-stamp your properly completed application, and award you 'Patent Pending' status for your innovation. Bingo! You now have a full twelve months to do your negotiations and the find the right partners to bring your product to market. Before the year is up, someone you assign will foot the bill for the full patent, and you will receive the negotiated signing fees, royalties, and any additional monies that you may have negotiated.

Can you write a provisional patent application and successfully submit it yourself? Certainly! You'll need a drawing and a written description of your invention. Then you'll need to complete the proper forms with the proper information on the proper lines. Mail the package to the USPTO. If you successfully figured out the right combination of forms, and filled them out properly, you should soon be notified of the awarded 'patent pending' status for your invention.

Then it's time to get to work negotiating -- your idea is now SAFE!
